Lab D Description

Lab D -"Exploring new horizons"

While many of you are still completing Lab C, Lab D is just around the corner. Lab D is where you get to shine as a developing teacher. You will each receive 15 minutes to teach a lesson on a topic that was provided to you. You are given the topic but you have the freedom to choose whatever skill or concept you desire to focus on within your lesson. For the purpose of this lab you will teach "high-school students", create a focused lesson while maintaining a safe learning environment and adapting to the needs of your students.

Task:

  1. You will design a 15 min lesson
  2. You will create a resource packet to be shared by the rest of the class ( in paper and online format).
  3. Your teaching is worth 20 points using a C9 Form similar to the one in Lab C
  4. The resource packet is worth 20 points
  5. The lesson plan, analysis and reflection of your teaching is worth 10 points

Planning Stage:

  1. Get to know your topic inside and out
  2. You may be teaching outside of the gym, it is up to you as the teacher to organize the session. For example: if you are doing bowling, you need to reserve bowling lanes for the students. Set up meetings with professor early on to discuss organizational aspects.
  3. If others are teaching the same topic, you need to discuss it together and find a focus that is unique.
  4. Draft of lessonplan  is due 7 days in advance!!! Failure to hand in lesson plan may result in a failure to teach, therefore potentially failing the class.
  5. Equipment sheet must be in 2 days in advance.

New from lab C:

  1. Lab C was done in curriculum groups, lab D is completed alone, so each student will have their own resource packet.
  2. You will be given specific teaching styles (D 7 in packet)- you can research these ahead of time.  The teaching style you will be teaching with is listed on the schedule (Lab D Schedule 604   Lab D Schedule 606 ). A demo will be provided after Lab C has been completed. Mosston Teaching Styles You can combine teaching styles but I must see you teach using the chosen teaching style as well.
  3. Technology is a part of education. You will need to integrate a piece of technology into your lesson. Ideas: Technology in PE  This piece of technology must have the purpose to enhance learning. So you decide on the technology and then discuss how it enhances learning. This is not simply using a music player or speaker or if you’re at the bowling alley using the electronic scoring machines. You need to find a way to incorporate more advanced technology. This may include: heart rate monitors (downloading and analyzing data), iDance (if applicable), projection screen and projector with your laptop.
  4. You must include three quality assessments (one for each of the domains: psychomotor, cognitive, and affective) that could be used during  your lesson to measure student achievement. The assessments must resemble samples on the PE Profile or 255 Packet (B10-B37)

Check List:

Resource Packet (in paper format  DUE TUE Nov 22 at noon in office AND online DUE Fr. DEC 2)

  2. History of activity and some other interesting facts about it
  3. Resources related to the activity: provide websites, books or places in the community that can help students learn more about the activity. (do not just give the title/name but in a short paagraph describe what they can learn by visiting the site or reading the book)

  14. Note: the online webpage should be a reflection of your work and should get the students to want to learn more, not simply a collection of documents! Certain documents you can upload but also have certain pieces of information typed on the webpage. Make it appealing!

Reflection/ analysis: (DUE 48 hours after teaching)

  5. C9 - by the teacher watching the video - Lab D C9 Form Final PDF.pdf    Lab D C9 Form Final.doc
  6. Transcript (if possible)

b. reflection:

  • Using C13 form from packet, write up a self-analysis of your teaching
  • Reflect on the observation forms used to assess your teaching (Time analysis, SOFIT, Teacher Behavior Scale , content development, and C9)
  • Reflect on use of technology and any behavior issues in class

Pre-teaching Stage:

a. teachers:

  1. Hand in printed and final copy of lesson plan - draft should have been sent to professor 7 days in advance and discussed during meeting when possible.
  2. Make sure you are wearing a watch
  3. Put up visual aids
  4. Set up equipment
  5. You may be asked to observe

b. Students:

  1. We may not always be in the gym so please pay attention to any emails/ notifications from classmates.
  2. I will have a few volunteers that will be video taping and observing (every student must do one of the observations)
  3. Some of you will be notified of a behavior task, act it out until the teacher acts on it.
  4. You must follow the instructions of the teachers
  5. Please reflect shortly in your folder on each lesson before ending class.

Teaching Stage

  1. Your teaching is worth 20 points in lab C - see forms
  2. You may or may not be asked to perform other tasks listen on your TP or for varying lengths of time. If you are well prepared, this should not pose much difficulty.
  3. You may or may not be asked to handle discipline and disability issues while teaching. Therefore, you should be familiar with how to handle these situations and individuals and have a well-documented strategic plan on how you will handle each incident. It is expected that each TC will read and create their own class rules and behavior management strategy based on the SUNY Cortland PE's positive learning environment (E9-E11) and prevent behavior problems.

Post-teaching Stage

  1. Immediately after your lesson, I will quickly debrief you personally and we will attempt to do a group-based debrief if time permits.
  2. You will need to watch your video several times.
  3. You must do your own C9 form. C9 for LabD.pdf
  4. You will receive a feedback, time, and content development sheets.
  5. You will do your own time analysis as well (therefore there should be 2 time coding sheets).
  6. Using the observation tools, reflect on what you did well, and need to work on, and especially on how your observations will impact and improve your student learning. Reflect on your growth between labs and use headings explaining every analysis.
  7. All forms should be handed in by the next class.
    1. Time analysis from TC
    2. Teacher Behavior Rating Form by observer
    3. SOFIT
    4. Content development pdf     word
    5. C9 Lab D C9 Form Final PDF.pdf    Lab D C9 Form Final.doc
    6. Reflection (see check list)

Putting your resource online

I bet you did an amazing job creating your resource materials for your activity. It is also great to share your work with others so later we can actually use these resources in our teaching.

Each student will receive one page on this website that you can use to create an interesting place to put your resources on. You can design the page as as you like and add all your forms required to teach the units.

Do not simply put a title and then a list of all your documents. Nobody will want to open every single one. Add some info on your webpage to get the students to look at different forms. Explain what they will find in each form as well.

The most important aspect is that it should look appealing and organized.

This is an assignment worth 5 points - this is added to your assignment grade and is not included in your Lab C grade.

Online portion is due on December 2nd
