Be aware that these are not the questions on the exam but are questions that can help you study and be aware of everything you should study for the midterm. This is a comprehensive exam that can ask information of everything we studied from the beginning of the semester.
Use the people in your curriculum group/class to study with.
Thoughts
- We began the semester discussing professionalism and its implications
- Next, we introduced the NYS learning standards, the New Era of education we are currently in. You should be able to discuss these at lengths and be able to explain them to a stranger, i.e. What distinguishes the New Era? How downward design works at all levels and all subjects-cite examples.
- We talked about School Report Cards and how they are an accountability measure for schools. What if PE goes on the school report card? What will it be?
- Do you roughly know the NASPE content standards? (See blue book - Moving into the Future) Do you specifically know the 4 NYS standards?
- We discussed how "great" teachers are great and why via the "three dimensions of teaching" ... how does this explain why most teachers never make "Teacher of the Year"?
- How about the essential elements as per the C-9 sheet? Can you explain all the ones we explored in Labs A, B, and BB?
- Objectives should be written so they are measurable and observable, WHY?
- Situation, task, criteria? Can you write objectives?
- What makes a good demonstration (D2Form) and what different demonstrations can you do (D2BForm)?
- What are different types of feedback?
- Analyzing ones teaching is important for your growth as a teacher, many different techniques exist. You have tried different techniques for Lab B and read about different techniques in Chapter 14, can you describe them and name know when you can use them?
- What is a curriculum? What entails curriculum planning? And how about scope and sequence? What is that?
- If you were asked to watch a video of a lesson, could you write a lesson plan for what you see without any errors?
The above points are from the midterm, for the final exam you will need to review all the above sections (especially the ones mistakes were made towards in midterm and labs) and the following:
- What are the different teaching styles according to Moston? How do these fit on a continuum? Can you give examples of each?
- Do you know what to when a student misbehaves? What's proximity and do you some other strategies to use? Preventing Behavior Problems
- Why do we assess? Can you create valid and reliable assessments for each of the 4 domains and align these with your objectives? Could you create assessments?
- What is a unit performance task and can you create one? (see yellow pages)
- Do you know all the effective teaching strategies (C9) and could you create a lesson on the fly?
- Could you analyze someone else's teaching performance?
- Are you aware of the legal ramifications for PE teachers? Can you name some duties all PE teachers have?
- Can you explain the 4 tests of negligence? And what's a standard of care and why is this important?
