PHYSICAL ACTIVITY MONITORS

Uses:

A physical activity monitor keeps track of the students' movement throughout the day. It will give you information on how active the students were.

Using this tool within your teaching

This tool can give you an idea of how active your students are. While the time coding analysis tells you how much they move, this tool can tell you the intensity in which they move. The activity monitor tells you the following activity levels: vigorous +, vigorous, moderately, easy, very easy. It can also tell you the steps taken and the calories burned

How to use it?

  1. Input the data (as other students may have used it before you) - this is your baseline.
  2. If the screen tells the date (like in the picture) you are on the home screen.
  3. The time at the bottom will tell you how long you have been moderately to vigorously active. We aim for students to be active for 60 minutes a day.
  4. For Lab C, you only need to note down the times in front of you without pushing any buttons.
  5. To find out more info you press the down button 2 times till you hit diary.
  6. Press the green check mark
  7. Press the green check mark again to get to today's date
  8. Click down to find out movement until target of 60 min a day, vigorous +, vigorous, moderate, easy, very easy, steps taken, calories consumed.
  9. To go back to home screen press the red check mark a few times.

How to analyze the date

  • Links to the spread sheets that shows the data:
  • Locate your name (TC)
  • On a separate spread sheet in excel, copy or type in the minutes before you started teaching and the minutes when you finished teaching
  • Subtract your finish time from your starting time for each student
  • Average out the minutes of the whole class
  • In a 10 minute lesson, 50% or more should be physical activity.
  • Now compare this with your time coding sheet. It may be that the number from the PA monitors is lower then from the time coding. Explain why that may be. Remember that the watch will tell you only moderate to vigorous PA on the home screen.
  • Print your excel sheet showing the numbers of the students and the average
  • Reflect on your findings in your teaching reflections.
