"Teaching through the Physical"

1 Country - 1 Game - 4 levels - 8 progressions

TC 1 (10 min)       TC 2 (10 min)      TC 3 (10 min)      TC 4 (10 min)

Gr K-3                    Gr. 4-6                  Gr. 7-9               Gr. 10-12

Introduction / Rationale

The next teaching experience within this course embraces education through the physical. There are million of games in the world played every day by people of all ages, yet, in PE programs within American schools the focus often lays with traditional American sports like basketball, football, vollayball, etc. The national and NY standards inform us that we must create physically educated people and therefore embrace a variety of recreational activities that can entice students to become more actively involved. There are many ways to teach and often students prefer to learn through movement. In this lab you will work together as a K-12 school. Each school will have 4 PE teachers, each responsible to teach certain grade levels. Together as a team you will design a program focused on game played within a specific country. Even though you will be working together as a team, you will all teach individually, yet in sequence. In the end, the students will receive a progression from K through grade 12 using a specific activity.

Task

  1. Create a K-12 School with 4 students - sign up with your instructor
  2. Browse the web for interesting international games
  3. As a group decide on a game and connect it with a specific country
  4. Each group will have a different country and therefore, a different game
  5. Create a resource packet (see below)
  6. Create a 10 minute lesson - it is expected that you teach more then just a game, we will also learn about the country or culture. You will need to research and learn, then bring the culture alive by teaching us through the physical meaning.
               Example of ideas which may provide you with teachable moments:

* Counting in a different language

* Stories/people from legends

* Famous historical people

* The flag: its’ colors, meanings?

* Food

* Customs

* Where is the country on a world map?

* Statistics

* Unique fitness links

Assessment

  • Group Resources Packet (binder): 5 points
    •  School name + mascot + TC names on front page + binder professionally organized - 1 point
    • Country background information: Start with a paragraph or two describing the country and the unique cultural differences you will try to weave into the lessons/ In short, what unique cultural things about this country are worth teaching? Minimum 10 facts - 1 point
    • Game details - use both text and pictures - 1 point
    • List of teachable ideas: Since every TC only has 10 minutes to teach a lesson, you can't teach everything you have learned about the country; no doubt you have thought of other teachable moments/idea. List them here so other teachers/readers can use them for lessons they may want to create. A minimum of 10 facts or interesting points about the country or culture. - 1 point
    • K-12 Scope and Sequence plan - 1 point
  • TC resource unit (should be put in resource binder): 10 points
    • Blockplan: 1 point
    • Lesson Plan : 2 points - this is your first draft, it can be developed and altered up to the day you teach.
    • Activity progression: 2 points
    • Assessments +answer keys connected to the three objectives (3): 2 points
    • Behavior Plan + class rules: 2 points - Look at Behavior Management presentation and packet E9-12 for ideas.
    • Picture of TC with VA: 1 point
  • Teaching Performance 20 points
  • Analysis and reflection of teaching: 10 points: to be handed in 1 week after teaching
    • General Reflection describing growth difference between labs appropriate linking to different forms (time coding, feedback, movement, Physical Activity, C9)
    • Time coding: Management < 15% (1pt), Activity >50% (2pts), Instruction <30% (1pt), Waiting <5% (1pt) - 5 points
    • Feedback Analysis
    • Movement Analysis
    • Physical Activity Data analysis
    • C9 Form completed after watching video C-9 for Int lab Baert.doc

Planning Stage

This assignment will require everyone to work as a team and as an individual teacher.

* Group work: You will need to set up a meeting to make sure the roles of group work or evenly distributed. You must work together to create the scope & sequence chart and talk about the logistics of equipment etc.

* Individual:

EACH teacher candidate (TC) must send me their lesson plan (LP) through email (at a minimum of 7 days in advance of the day you teach), other forms are due on Oct. 26

  1. A correctly completed lesson plan (LP). The earlier you send it in, the more feedback can be provided to assist you in developing a strong lesson. If you do not make a concerted effort at completing the LP, I will not accept it and thus will receive 0 points and will not be able to teach.
  2. An activity progression sheet with a minimum of 40 activity progressions due at the time you teach.
  3. Three quality assessments (one for each of the domains: psychomotor, cognitive, and affective) that could be used during your lesson to measure student achievement. The assessments must resemble samples of the PE Profile or in our 255 Packet (Yellow sheets B10-B37)
  4. A behavior plan: It is expected that each TC will read, reflect and create their own class rules and behavior management strategy/plan based on SUNY Cortland PE's positive learning environment (E9-E11) and prevent behavior problems.

Equipment

Each group will receive 1 blue card to put equipment on. All equipment for that day must be ordered at least 2 days BEFORE you teach and it must be picked up and set up by you.

Pre-Teaching Stage

A. Teachers

  1. Hand in printed and final copy of lesson plan
  2. All TC's must show that they are wearing a watch
  3. Put up following posters: class rules, visual aids
  4. Setup equipment
  5. Prepare to observe - while other TC is teaching you will observe using appropriate forms

B. Observers:

You will rotate through each task so make sure you all have ALL the specific forms. I will have the forms in folders. Take all the forms you need at the beginning of the class so you do not need to move around.

  1. Bring timer that can show seconds
  2. Bring pencil
  3. Observations to do: time analysis, movement, and feedback
  4. The observation sheets go back to the TCs at the end of the lesson

C. Students:

  1. Enter gym and ask professor any questions if there is time - Professor will help teachers first.
  2. You may be requested to act out certain behavior problems or you may be asked to portray a student with a certain disability.
  3. Before the class begins and after each TC finishes you must put in the data from the PA monitor (watches) on designated sheet - after that, sit down and wait for instructions from the teacher.
  4. You may be asked to video tape or take photographs

Teaching Stage

  1. Your teaching is worth 20 points in lab C - see C9
  2. You may or may not be asked to perform other tasks listen on your TP or for varying lengths of time. If you are well prepared, this should not pose much difficulty.
  3. You may or may not be asked to handle discipline and disability issues while teaching. Therefore, you should be familiar with how to handle these situations and individuals and have a well-documented strategic plan on how you will handle each incident. It is expected that each TC will read and create their own class rules and behavior management strategy based on the SUNY Cortland PE's positive learning environment (E9-E11) and prevent behavior problems.

Post-Teaching Stage

  1. Immediately after your lesson, I will quickly debrief you personally and we will attempt to do a group-based debrief if time permits. If we run out of time.
  2. You will need to watch your video several times.
  3. You must do your own C9 form.
  4. You will receive a feedback, time, and movement analysis as well as the data from the physical activity monitors.
  5. You will do your own time analysis as well (therefore there should be 2 time coding sheets).
  6. Using the observation tools, reflect on what you did well, and need to work on, and especially on how your observations will impact and improve your student learning. Reflect on your growth between labs and use headings explaining every analysis.
  7. All forms should be handed in 7 days  following your teaching session.
    1. Movement analysis
    2. Time analysis from observer
    3. Time analysis from TC
    4. Feedback Analysis
    5. C9
    6. Reflection

Putting the Resource online

I bet you did an amazing job creating your resource materials for your culture/country. It is also great to share your work with others so later we can actually use these resources in our teaching.

Each curriculum group will receive one page on this website that you can use to create an interesting place to put your resources on. YOu can design the page as a group and add all your forms required to teach the units.

The most important aspect is that it should look appealing and organized.

This is an assignment worth 5 points - this is added to your assignment grade and is not included in your Lab C grade.

Online portion is due on November 4th.
